Does this make sense? Get rid of income tax, replace with consumption tax. That way the U.S. Govt can profit ?

That is not a new concept and it has some merit. In Europe they use VAT. But there are a lot of politically powerful forces that work to oppose any reforms to the U.S. tax code.
