Just bought 9mm 147 grain ammo for glock 17, is subsonic bad?

I read online that the remington 9mm 147 grain I got is subsonic, what does that mean, and is this bad for self defense use? Im new to guns, but the gun store owner told me it was good, but Ive read mixed reviews now.
