The text doesn't necessarily imply that Caiaphas was good or evil. He was obviously acting in what he thought were the best interests of his country. And his statements are not identified as an actual prophesy - he did not mean that the world would be saved through the atoning death of Christ, he meant that executing Jesus would prevent a riot at Pover and keep the Romans from killing people. The Christians, however, saw great significance in his statement.
